Is DAO Clinically Tested?

DAOgest®, the porcine-derived DAO used in OmneDiem® Histamine Digest® products, has been the subject of human clinical research. As a dietary supplement ingredient, DAO is not FDA-approved to treat, diagnose, cure, or prevent any disease — and no supplement can make that claim. What the published research does evaluate is whether DAO supplementation may support the body's natural histamine management process when taken before consuming high-histamine foods and beverages.* 

What the Research Includes

An observational study published in Clinical Nutrition ESPEN evaluated the safety of DAOgest® supplementation in 82 patients over a period of 4 weeks. Participants were instructed to take a capsule containing 4.2mg of DAOgest® DAO before their main daily meal.* 

Results showed reduced severity across multiple symptom subcategories evaluated at week one, including improvements in gastrointestinal, skin, nervous, respiratory, and circulatory symptom categories. These findings are reported in the published literature and are not claims made by OmneDiem® about its products. A separate small clinical trial examined the effect of DAO supplementation in individuals with low serum DAO and nonspecific, recurrent gastrointestinal concerns while on a low-histamine diet. Participants took 4.2mg of extracted porcine kidney protein before meals for one month, with results showing a reduction in reported gastrointestinal discomfort across measures including bloating, nausea, and abdominal complaints.* 

To date, approximately twenty studies have investigated the effectiveness of a low-histamine diet or DAO supplementation in relation to the frequency and intensity of experiences associated with histamine sensitivity, with promising results reported across the body of literature. Research in this area is ongoing, and a prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial is currently underway at the University of Barcelona examining both porcine and plant-based DAO supplementation.*

Laboratory research published in the Journal of Food Science has also evaluated the activity of porcine DAO for histamine breakdown in food-relevant contexts, noting that porcine DAO demonstrates histamine-degrading capacity in vitro.*
