When should I take DAO?
Timing is everything when it comes to DAO supplementation — and the reason is straightforward. Unlike vitamins or minerals that build up in the body over time, DAO is a digestive enzyme that works locally in the gut. It needs to be present in the small intestine at the same time as dietary histamine in order to support the breakdown process.* That means taking it proactively — before the histamine arrives — is key.*
The General Guideline: Before Meals and Beverages
OmneDiem® recommends taking Histamine Digest® prior to or when you are about to consume high-histamine foods and beverages.* The designed-release capsule is formulated to bypass the stomach and activate in the small intestine, which is where dietary histamine is absorbed and where DAO enzyme activity is most relevant.* Published data on DAOgest® suggests that DAO promotes histamine breakdown within approximately 20 minutes of intake.*
As a practical guide:
- Take 1 capsule before meals that include high-histamine foods such as aged cheese, cured meats, fermented foods, vinegar-based dressings, leftover proteins, or canned and smoked fish.*
- Take 1 capsule before alcoholic beverages, particularly red wine, craft beer, champagne, or spirits — which both contain histamine and may affect the body's natural DAO activity.*
- Take 1–2 capsules if consuming a meal high in both histamine-rich and histamine-liberating foods, or if you are consuming a larger volume of high-histamine items than usual.*
The timing protocol is consistent across the OmneDiem® Histamine Digest® family — take before consuming high-histamine foods or beverages — but the potency differs:
OmneDiem® Histamine Digest® (15,000 HDU) — The standard formulation for everyday use before meals and beverages containing histamine-rich ingredients.*
OmneDiem® Histamine Digest® PureMAX (40,000 HDU) — Higher-potency DAO for those who may benefit from greater enzyme support before higher-histamine meals or occasions.* The same pre-meal timing applies.*
OmneDiem® Histamine Complete — Combines DAO with additional ingredients to support healthy seasonal respiratory and sinus function.* Take before consuming high-histamine foods or beverages, as with the standard Histamine Digest® formulation.* Those using Histamine Complete for seasonal environmental histamine support may also find benefit in consistent daily use — consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.*
A Few Additional Notes
Consistency matters.
Some individuals find that taking DAO before every meal — not just the meals they anticipate being problematic — provides more predictable support, particularly when dining out or in situations where the histamine content of food is uncertain.
DAO supplements are not intended as a substitute for avoiding foods to which you have a known allergy, and they are not a treatment for any health condition. Always consult your healthcare provider about the supplement approach that is right for your individual needs.
Designed Release Capsule Technology
OmneDiem® does not recommend opening or crushing the capsule. The designed-release technology is specifically engineered to protect the delicate DAO enzyme from stomach acid and deliver it intact to the small intestine. Breaking the capsule bypasses this protection and may significantly reduce enzymatic activity.*
